Ethereum uses denominations of the same asset
ETH, Gwei and Wei are not different tokens. They are denominations of ether, similar to expressing the same measurement in larger or smaller units. Different denominations make very small values easier to read.
Wei is the smallest standard denomination
One ETH equals 10^18 Wei. Because blockchain values often need exact integer representation, Wei is useful at the protocol and programming level where fractional Wei is not needed.
Gwei is convenient for gas prices
One Gwei equals 10^9 Wei and 10^-9 ETH. Gas prices are commonly shown in Gwei because values such as 20 Gwei are easier to read than 0.000000020 ETH per gas.
Conversion table
The core relationships are: 1 ETH = 1,000,000,000 Gwei; 1 Gwei = 1,000,000,000 Wei; and 1 ETH = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 Wei. These fixed relationships do not require a market-price API.
Example: Gwei to ETH
If a gas price is 25 Gwei, that equals 0.000000025 ETH per gas unit. Multiplying by gas used gives the transaction fee before considering the EIP-1559 cap mechanics represented by the entered scenario.
Example: ETH to Wei
0.5 ETH equals 500,000,000,000,000,000 Wei. For exact conversions, integer scaling is preferable to careless floating-point arithmetic because Ethereum denominations can involve many decimal places.
Unit conversion is separate from fiat value
