Position sizing starts with a risk budget
Instead of choosing a coin quantity first, define account capital and the percentage or amount you are prepared to model as loss. That creates a risk budget. The tool then asks how much of that budget each unit of the position would lose if price reaches the entered stop.
Calculate stop distance in the correct direction
For a long position the stop is normally below entry; for a short position it is normally above entry. The absolute distance becomes part of loss per unit. Direction validation helps catch a common input mistake before position quantity is calculated.
Add modeled transaction costs
Fees paid to enter and exit can consume part of the risk budget. If you ignore them, the position may be slightly larger than the stated risk model supports. Use the fee rate applicable to your own trading venue and product.
Derive quantity from the budget
The core relationship is risk budget divided by modeled loss per unit. This keeps account risk constant as stop distance changes. Moving the stop farther away therefore reduces quantity; moving it closer increases the calculated quantity.
Notional value and margin are different
Quantity multiplied by entry price gives notional exposure. With leverage, required margin may be only a fraction of that notional, but the position still has the larger market exposure. Do not interpret low margin as low risk.
Why leverage is deliberately not used to increase the risk budget
A disciplined calculator can hold the user's selected risk budget constant and show how leverage changes margin. Automatically multiplying risk by leverage would change the user's stated loss constraint and blur the distinction between exposure and collateral.
What the formula cannot model
Slippage, funding, liquidation mechanics, partial fills, exchange maintenance margin and sudden gaps can change actual outcomes. Those factors are venue- and product-specific, so a general browser calculator should state the limitation rather than fabricate precision.
